This is not "the Cuban-American community." My mom is elderly & white, like many in this group. But she is a woman, her views are nuanced, & she thinks the embargo is ineffective & cruel. Which means she is not represented when people speak of "the Cuban-American community. https://twitter.com/HatzelVelaWPLG/status/1362094865597751296
If people are making a career, or a profit, out of speaking for the mythic Cuban-American community politically, they should be open to freedoms of thought, speech and political heterodoxy that they demand in Cuba. Stop settling for this.
Many in my generation exiled themselves from Miami because of this stranglehold. Many more stayed and stay silent. It's tragic to see the clientelisms & political patronage block change here & in Cuba. Tragic to see political operatives want so little, create so little change.
When journalists accept the rules of the game and the false "speaking for the community" politics of half a decade, they misdirect, or miss the story. The story is changing, and this is not where the community or the future lie. Stop using the term "the Cuban-American community."
Because despite the politicians and lobbyists who want to make money on the term, turning a fiction into their brand, There. is. no. Cuban-American. community.
