On this Day 200 years ago in 1821 Lola Montez (Eliza Dolores Gilbert) was born. An extraordinary woman from Limerick who toured the world as a dancer, sparked revolutions, conquered Kings and went out with a string of notable individuals including Alexandre Dumas & Franz Liszt.
Lola's mother, Elizabeth Oliver was the illegitimate daughter of Charles Oliver of Castle Oliver, Co. Limerick.
Eliza's mother was disowned and married an impoverished British officer on police duty in pre-Famine Ireland.
Lola was born in Co.Sligo where her father was stationed.
Lola was a real-life Barry Lyndon and had a knack for getting the attention of Kings, czars and princes.
She used her relationships with powerful rulers to put forward her own ideas and philosophies concerning matters of State. She caused revolutions in both Germany & Poland...
Lola went from rags to riches and back again many times in her life, but always managed to reinvent herself and exceed expectations.
She is the most extraordinary historical figure I've ever researched and despite her birth cert, always claimed she was born in Limerick
