It's a big deal that DA Gascon is leaving the California District Attorneys Association.

We at @ppp_unc have been studying prosecutor associations. Our work is not yet done, but so far the CDAA is one of the most active & one of the *least successful* associations we've seen. https://twitter.com/GeorgeGascon/status/1361821328412610561
We identified & coded all of the criminal justice related bills that were introduce in the CA legislature during 2015-2018. Then we identified whether the CDAA or any of the other CA prosecutor associations (like the Los Angeles Association of Deputy District Attorneys) lobbied.
In other states, we found that when a prosecutor association lobbied in favor of a bill, it was more likely to pass than criminal justice bills as a whole. Similarly, when a prosecutor association lobbied against a bill, it was even less likely to pass than other cj bills.
California is different

When CA prosecutors lobby in favor of a bill, it has barely any effect--47.5% of supported bills passed, as compared to an ordinary rate of 45%

And when they lobbied against a bill, it was actually MORE likely to pass than if they didn't (52% pass rate)
There is a story to be told about the political message behind @GeorgeGascon 's decision to leave the CDAA and join @ProsAlliance

But I also wonder whether this new association will prove to be more effective, given that the CDAA doesn't appear to be very successful right now
