What Roswaal specifically suffering from is called mana poisoning which occurs in people whose gates aren't proper releasing mana from their body due to poor circulation. So they will continue to accumulate it until surpasses the amount their od can hold
but without ability to let it out, it will kill them by exploding from inside! So having too much mana beyond what body can handle is bad for you. This will actually be a bit relevant in the later arcs. But this problem did sort of happened in Memory Snow except
Puck had no trouble releasing his internal mana it on his own, so he never had to worry on that end

BTW, how Garf who couldn't perceive the witch's scent knew it was coming from Subaru is also because Shima and rest of the clones could. He got that information from Shima specifically

BTW, Roswaal right now is not aware of the change that has happen to Emilia (Subaru finally getting in contract with Puck & removing shackles on her mind) which why he still thinks things will eventually end up the same way as the other loops
