Just want to say after yesterday’s threads on the hell of freelancing with editors who ghost two of my editors who I had not heard back from in months wrote back. Their emails were so apologetic & kind. I am glad I tweeted! I find freelancers worry about speaking out a lot.
Generally you are not the only person noting something is off when something is off. Being direct with your frustration can be helpful. Also people generally respect people with boundaries, people who have real needs and want proper communication. Hiding from probs is red flaggy.
I have always been straightforward and to this day I have never lost an opportunity because of it. I do not engage with fear. And I only tend to get more gigs, more opps for leadership positions, etc. I would rather be respected than liked & I think I am!
Also if you act like money does not matter to you, congrats, you sound like a rich person! Nothing says trust fund more than writers who never talk money.
It is not “classy” to pretend money is not important to you.
These two assignments will be into five figures for me which is quite lifesaving.
