When 2019 rolled around, Hernandez struggled to duplicate the same power and OBP skills he showed in 2018.
103 Games - .265/.299./.397/.696 - 9 HRs - 19 2Bs - 7/7 SBs - 17/65 BB/K - 39% CS%
Being a raw 21-year-old catcher at A+ is no small task though.

Writing him off for having a tough season with the bat at this developmental stage is downright stupid.
Especially considering his arm behind the plate continued to shine through. His struggles on one side of the ball didn’t carry over to the other side.

That shows a sign of maturity a lot of prospects don’t have. So many guys completely fall apart if they’re struggling in one part of the game.
What also needs to be mentioned is how much he raked in the AFL following that season.

In 11 games with the Salt River Raptors, he slashed .359/.381/.513/.894 with a HR, 2 2Bs, and 5 RBIs.
#Rays obviously weren’t low on him either, sending him to the #AFL for a second time before his age-22 season.

Make no mistake. Bloom knew what he was looking for here. Especially considering he saw both his breakout season and his stock take a dip the following year.
It likely speaks for how TB’s front office felt about him too.
I can’t believe Bloom got him + more for Mazza/Springs/$.

Important thing to keep in mind:
While Hernandez has shown an excellent arm behind the plate, he has some significant strides to make in terms of receiving and blocking.
But, the #RedSox have plenty of time to develop those things. Grabbing a catcher with this much upside...

...is a huge win for a system that lacks a considerable amount of depth at the position.
Having flashed the tools he has in pro-ball is an accomplishment within itself. 23 is still very young in catching years. It’ll be key to let him take his time climbing the latter. #RedSox
