The Nylander hate from certain media types isn't hard to figure out, it's a combination of a few things. 1) He doesn't talk to them. 2) While he was born in Canada he's not a "good ol' Canadian boy". 3) He's loved by stats people. Not complicated.
Even if 2 and 3 were still true, if Nylander was a player who chummed around with media, he would probably not be that criticized. Talking to media all the time gets you treated with kid gloves, it's hard to avoid. Look at people like Josh Gorges in Montreal.
Even when Gorges was clearly no longer a good player and being carried heavily by Subban, there wasn't a whisper of criticism. He was a great dude and everyone's friend. Why blow up your best quote source?
People responding "eye test"... No... Your eye test is biased by what you're told. Nylander has flaws in his game like anyone, but he's no less consistent than Marner is, but all his mistakes will be pointed out ad nauseum until you're trained to search them out.
It is INCREDIBLY difficult to separate what you're told to see by broadcasters and media from what is actually happening. Most casual fans will just parrot what they hear, because most criticism has at least a grain of truth, even if it often misses the forest for the trees.
