Apparently @MooreintheAM was putting out a lot of baseless info this morning on homeless encampments and the fire that tragically killed someone this am.
It is just flatly false that encampment residents are visited daily by a social worker and offered safe indoor spaces. Actual truth, @MooreintheAM? The city has lied repeatedly about shelter occupancy/availability for years and I have proved it time and again in media and court.
City workers visit encampment residents irregularly and almost always offer poor spaces (such as in the congregate settings where CoVID is rampant). There aren’t enough spaces for everyone, no matter what City’s purposely fudged data says.
And when camp residents are offered good spaces (such as in hotel rooms), nearly all accept.
This happened just recently:
A fire at Holy Trinity. The City lied and told @kristynwongtam that they had all been offered hotel spaces and refused.
Workers at the Church told KWT that was false, congregate offered.
City came back, actually offered hotels. And?

And ... dozens accepted. Three tents with less than half a dozen people remain.
Some people like Derrick at Moss Park *do* hold out for actual housing instead of getting trapped in shelter cycle.
8 months later, Derrick was offered and accepted housing. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/tents-moss-park-toronto-homeless-1.5651892

The answer to homelessness is not cruelty, recrimination, and shaming.
The answer is housing. Decent. Well built. Affordable housing for all. https://www.thestar.com/opinion/star-columnists/2017/12/11/can-canada-think-big-on-housing-again.html

Instead? Every time there is a real proposal to put money into housing ... it is the first thing to get CHOPPED come budget time. https://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/2021/02/11/mayors-executive-committee-approves-almost-14b-in-spending-but-nothing-for-supportive-housing-proposal-for-torontos-homeless.html
The story line @MooreintheAM pushed today is just what we expect. A City flack pretending to be a journalist while just carrying water for government interests. It is sheer laziness or mendacity.
