If you really enjoy cinema or any art it’s important to question what about that medium speaks to you. And why you love it. Most of the people I’ve seen arguing against martin’s takes are pop culture fans, nerd culture reporters, etc etc & I think that perspective matters.
The vast majority is not gonna understand the importance of film preservation, restoration, and especially film appreciation the way he does. Because the medium never spoke to them in the way it’s spoken to someone like him.
I always talk about Pather Panchali as my favourite film & that was a film that was nearly lost in a fire in 1993 until it was restored by the Criterion Collection 20 years later. That film is one of the most important works to come out of India. So film restoration matters to me
At no point did he say that streaming services are bad but he’s acknowledging their goal of consumption. The CEO of Netflix once said their only competition is sleep, that their goal is binge culture. He directly compares this to curated services that pay attention to quality.
So it’s entirely true that major services don’t hold the same desire to preserve or advance the art form and that’s why films are being reduced to “content”. The perspective matters. Martin reflecting on the industry is not some call out against you for watching MCU movies lol
It’s just a man who really loves films reflecting on the medium & the industry around it, and if Martin fucking Scorsese can’t discuss cinema without being scrutinized then who can? I think it proves his exact point when ppl think saying film is still an art is some elitist take
& furthermore streaming services never have & never will “save films”. People save films. As long as people view, support, discuss, and create art it’ll always be alive.
