Mars landing tomorrow, so in lieu of my normal “Good Morning” post, I give you my childhood friend, Todd. Published composer, recording artist, and, most importantly, lead propulsion engineer at JPL (being Katherine Heigl’s date at the Golden Globes is just a footnote).
Todd went to JPL straight from MIT in 1989, cutting his teeth solving problems on the Voyager missions. Since then, he’s had a hand, and his giant brain, in designing the engines on every mission since. Tomorrow, he will give the final OK to fire the engines to begin the
descent to the surface of Mars (again).

In honor of the occasion, he’s given us a rewrite of a classic, in his long-beloved “Prop-Guy” persona. You can watch the video here. https://www.facebook.com/1062651221/posts/10222103930041584/
A decade ago, I got the most amazing, 8-hour, insider tour of JPL. It was a holiday, but Todd was the on-call guy that day, and spent it boggling my mind. I even got to hang with “Mohawk Guy”, and answer a few questions from the clamoring press gaggle.
I got to see the beginnings of the Webb Telescope in one of the clean rooms, and briefly play with the “sandbox” Opportunity rover. I held both the lightest (at the time) substance known (aerographite), and the heaviest (Osmium), at the same time. It was an amazing day.
Anyway, for space nerds, it’s butt-clenching time. 31 hours and change. Good luck, Todd. We’re all counting on you.
