The assumption behind registries is that police don’t know they’re responding to mental health crisis calls or dealing with someone with a developmental disability when they “accidentally” kill. Which is not a real problem. Police know. https://twitter.com/wnpr/status/1361827707017965570
The cops who killed Stephon Watts had taken a training course on autism and knew they were responding to a mental health crisis. They shot him anyway. https://m.chicagoreader.com/chicago/stephon-watts-police-shooting-autism-death/Content?oid=20512018
Police training and registries both assume that police would behave differently knowing they’re responding to a disabled person.
And there’s just no evidence that’s true.
And there’s just no evidence that’s true.
I’d have more positive thoughts about police reform if the proposed reforms weren’t all things that sound nice on paper but have no basis in reality and no evidence that anything will improve.
