1/ @nature asked over 100 scientists if they felt that #COVID19 was going to become endemic & circulate on earth for years to come. ~90% felt this was a likely or very likely scenario.

2/ Why will #COVID19 be around for a while? A few reasons....

*It is very contagious
*Mild-to-no symptoms in many (harder to identify cases)
*Significant pre-symptomatic transmission
*Non-animal reservoirs of the virus
*People can get re-infected

...more below...
3/ cont....

*Vaccines reduce the risk of infection but do not prevent infection all the time

*Vaccines may reduce risk of transmission but likely not all the time

*Slow/inequitable global vaccine rollout

*I'm sure there are many other reasons...

4/ So what happens?

While the virus will be around for a while, it may gradually cause less harm, driven by growing partial immunity in populations via (repeated) natural infection & (repeated) vaccination, +/- viral evolution. https://bit.ly/2ODsT88
5/ What do we do? Basically what we've been doing all along (caveat: some attempts better than others)...protect ourselves/communities from infection until more widespread vaccine rollout. And then re-vaccinate to keep up with emerging variants. And gradually re-open.
6/ Curious what the global reopening will look like & wonder about proof of vaccination for international travel. Perhaps some restrictions start to lift in summer/fall 2021?

Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is required to enter many countries, #COVID19 vaccination may be next?
Lastly - this pandemic will come to an end. Things will get better. That doesn't mean the virus will disappear, it just means that between population immunity/viral changes, things will gradually settle down, perhaps as SARS-CoV-2 morphs into a seasonal coronavirus.
.....supposed to read "non-human animal reservoirs" in point #2 above.
