Ok, probably an unpopular opinion.

I’m thinking about Biden and his refusal to forgive the $50k. I’m thinking about his seeming desire to stay above the fray on a lot of these issues by saying he doesn’t believe he has the authority.

I think what he’s doing is really important.
For years, we have put more and more responsibility on the Executive Branch to do the things that Congress can’t or won’t. We have seen the Presidential powers balloon for decades and Congressional responsibility shrink to giving explanations as to why they’re unable to do things
One of the things I’ve wished that we could see in American politics is a President who is willing to curtail their own power and return it to the responsibility of Congress.

And what Biden is doing is just that. He’s reminding us that the Presidency has limitations.
And it’s also a lesson that the Presidency *should* have limitations. Significant limitations. How many EOs have been issued in the last 50 years simply because Congress wouldn’t act? How many horrible ideas have been borne out of that power, accountable to no one?
How many of us voted for Representatives and Senators that have time and time again passed the buck to a President to do their job because they won’t lift a finger to change their own rules so that they can have that power?
I think it’s time to stop asking what Joe will do, and time to start asking why it’s his responsibility and not the responsibility of Congress. It’s time to put pressure on Senators to kill the filibuster. It’s time to pressure Congress to do their constitutional duty.
President Biden is doing everything he can to wrangle the mistakes of the last administration. That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be accountable for mistakes, but the only reason we thought he would cancel student debt at all is because Congress passed the buck.
And I love Elizabeth Warren and I get that she’s just trying to help a ton of people, but this is Congress’ job, not the President. If she wants this done so badly, she should cut the power in Joe Manchin’s office and take a baseball bat to talk to him about the filibuster.
Because if we’re going to reform our government the first thing we need to do is nuke the filibuster, and the second is rebuild the separation of powers and reinforce checks and balances.

Congress has the power of the purse, not the President. Let them do their job.
