There's is a spectrum of susceptibility to the temptation of food, and of course some people can navigate this food environment.

There's also a spectrum of willpower! But when 3/4 of humans can't navigate the system successfully, the problem is the system not the humans.
Navigation gets a lot harder if you're trying to feed kids on a shoestring, or you're stressed out at work, or somebody gets sick in your family.

Fixing the public health problem that is obesity is HARD, but it starts with support and compassion.
The recent study showing semaglutide can help people lose weight is very promising, and if you're not cheering the possibility that its side effects are going to prove manageable and not too serious, you're on the wrong side. https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMoa2032183
So, @matthewsyed, you can navigate the food environment? I'm glad. I hope you continue to be able to, and I also hope you have success against other temptations - to spend, to take drugs, to not exercise, to drink too much, to be mean to people.
I succeed, too, but I didn't always and I fight my weight every day. And that's WITH a supportive family, financial security, a satisfying job, a flexible schedule, a great kitchen, and some skill.

Maybe you have some of those things too?

Spare a thought for those who don't.
Companies spend billions of dollars to swamp human willpower.

And it's not that hard! Humans are optimized for food scarcity, and evolution hasn't equipped us for abundance.

The problem is the FOOD ENVIRONMENT.

Thanks for listening.
