Varāhamihira says a good astronomer should be handsome & have a good physique. (अभिजातः प्रियदर्शनो विनीतवेषः)

Merits and demerits are often reflective of the physical appearance of the body. (शरीराकारानुवर्तिनो हि गुणा दोषा)

A man with a good physique is called 'वपुष्मान्'
The astronomer should be well-versed in mathematics and his calculations should be perfect. If such a condition isn't met, he will never be successful. (ग्रन्थो अन्यथान्यथार्थं करणं यश् च अन्यथा करोति अबुधः)
He must be able to understand the various objections, answer them to show the nectar of the science in pristine language just like purifying ore and removing its dirt gets us pure gold. The one who can treat the sciences in this manner is the true astronomer.
Varāhamihira says that the best men have a height of 108 digits, (200 cm / 6'6~), the medium type of men have a height of 96 digits (~ 182 cm / 6'0"), the inferior men have a height of 84 digits, (~ 160 cm / 5'3")
Varāhamihira calls these 108 digit tall men as "malvyas" and says they are handsome, white teeth, tree trunk arms etc.

They are Kings of cultured mind of Broach, Sindhu, Saurashtra, Lata etc. They live for 70 years.
These 6'5-6'6 tall ideal man being located in the North-West corresponds to the modern day height distributions. Varāha goes on to discuss 3 more types of men (shasha, ruchaka, bhadra) with varying heights. One thing is, he correctly notes that shorter men live longest.
Varāhamihira fully recognizes the aesthetics and physicality of a masculine man & its importance (even in a treatise on astronomy).

He says those with muscular chests become heroes, those with weak ones indignant & unmanly. Interestingly, he calls blue eyed men as "cruel"
Kings have a voice similar to the sound of elephants and roar of lions, or thunder of clouds. Those with donkey voices or broken voices are devoid of wealth, unhappy.

Correctly recognizing a basic feat of sexual selection here. [low pitch voice = more reproductive fitness]
