NEWS: @Ford announced electrification plans for Europe.
SPOILER: Ford is *not* going to be an all- #EV company in Europe by 2030.
THREAD: It's important to read the attached press release carefully to understand what's going on here. (1 of X)

(2 of X) Wording can be interpreted 2 ways: (1) By 2026, every single passenger vehicle Ford sells in Europe will have a plug. By 2030, they'll all be BEVs.
I've seen a few quick, sloppy headlines suggesting this: Ford will sell only zero-emission vehicles in Europe by 2030.
I've seen a few quick, sloppy headlines suggesting this: Ford will sell only zero-emission vehicles in Europe by 2030.
(3 of X) But there's another reading: (2) Every passenger *model line* Ford sells in Europe by 2026 will *offer* a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) option.
By 2030, every vehicle it sells will have a plug, i.e. be PHEV or BEV.
That's quite different.

(4 of X) I've written often about media interpretations of OEM announcements on #EV technology and product plans.
Rushed reporters without a deep understanding of the #EV transition plus verrrrrrrrrry carefully worded press releases often combine to produce erroneous reporting.

(5 of X) Earlier examples include Volvo's 2017 electrification pledge (which does NOT equal "all-electric cars"): https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1111413_hey-media-get-it-straight-electrified-is-not-electric-and-the-difference-matters
(6 of X) And GM's "aspiration" to sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2035: https://www.thedrive.com/tech/39016/gm-aspires-to-sell-only-evs-by-2035-heres-how-to-understand-what-that-really-means
(7 of X) Don't get me wrong: These are all major steps in the right direction.
They signal more electrification, more plugs offered to more buyers in more markets + a continuing slow transition away from engines that burn fossil fuels in dozens of tiny explosions each second.

(8 of X) I sense a continued, palpable hunger among reporters + #EV fanbois for a huge global brand to drop the gloves + say, "That's it, we're only selling battery-electric vehicles."
That will happen. But not for several years. Multiple NEW all-electric brands will come first.

(9 of 9) Meanwhile, to reiterate, Ford's announcement today means this: By 2026, every passenger *model line* it sells in Europe will *offer* a PHEV or BEV option.
By 2030, every single passenger vehicle sold will be a PHEV or BEV.
And I confirmed this with Ford. The end. #EV

ADD: (10 of 9) @Ford says by 2030 "every passenger vehicle will be all-electric" i.e. BEV.
But, "We don't discuss future products," so unclear if that includes psgr models of LCVs. Best I got: "all passenger vehicles." Make of it what you will.
