which is why even though the infrastructure on twitter already exists to restrict certain accounts or content from minors (alcohol companies get it), theyre not going to use it. the clicks are profit, the hurt is profit, the drama and fights over it are profit
younger millennials grew up on the internet too and i think that gets forgotten. but for me, socmed wasnt around until myspace launched in high school. there were 739393 websites and i just chose not to go to the ones with unavoidable porn until i was at an age where i wanted it
but now, social activity is focused on like five websites, which drive engagement at any cost and purposely show you content you dont want to see in hopes you'll stick around to be angry and hurt

idk if this is coherent but my point is, none of this is by accident. surveillance capitalists want u to be anxious, stressed, angry, and constantly doomscrolling. for younger folk that means wanting them to see content theyre not ready for so their outrage drives engagement
they could give us greater controls over who sees our content, enforce stricter policies about minors and adult content, outright gate kids off on their own site, but they wont do any of these and thats a conscious decision
i should also note offhand that im very wary of anything even adjacent to "kids these days!!" because literally every generation thinks the ones after them are doing it wrong
but i dont think that should stop us from being honest about demographical/cultural trends

- its true that everyone is prone to weird, self-righteous, underinformed black-and-white thinking as a teenager or New Adult but that doesnt happen in a vaccum, yeah? that exploration helps us shape the beliefs we hold later in life
