I finished the Fate route today and I would've never thought that Saber would become my favorite character, but she is actually a really tragic, interesting and heartwarming character.
Through Shirou's dreams we get to see that she, who pulled out the Caliburn from the stone, had to become the new king of britania. She as a women would've never been accepted as the king by the people in britania, so she always had to hide in her big armor.
Since she had a small body and a face that seemed like that of a women her own knights started to question the identity of the new king, but due to all battles that Arturia fought the knights started to accept her. Then she was called the "King of Knights".
The next thing we get from Saber's backstory is what it takes and means to become a king. "A king is not a human. One cannot protect a country with human emotions." This is the first line that comes to my mind when I think of Saber.
Now we come to the part where she becomes a servant. Saber may at first seem like a normal servant but there is actually a really big difference.
Normally a heroic spirit gets summoned from the Throne of Heroes by the holy grail war. In Saber's case she gets summoned from her last battlefield where she nearly faced death. So in order to protect her country she made a contract for the holy grail war.
Everytime she fails to get the holy grail, she is sent back to the battlefield where she suffers the same fate again. That's why she was participating in the fourth and in the fifth holy grail war and kept her memories of the fourth.
So Saber appears in Shirou's world. Like the other servants she kept her pride and ideals of her life as Arturia Pendragon. Now we get the Saber-Shirou dynamic which I really love.
Shirou was dreaming every night about her story and finally started to understand the girl that never showed any emotions and was acting careless. There are also a lot of scenes where Saber says that Shirou shouldn't treat her like a human.
But due to her dynamic with Shirou she starts to become a human again during the story. With all those SoL moments (the date for example) their dynamic just gets much more beautiful. But then they also have a conflict where Saber nearly dissolves their contract.
Shirou is acting selfish and wants to find a way to keep Saber forever while Saber's heart is still stuck in that scenery where she has to protect her country. So while Shirou wants to destroy the Holy Grail, Saber still seeks to get it.
But in the last battle Saber finally accepts that her life was not in vain and that she did everything she could. That's where she gave up on the holy grail and destroyed it with Shirou.
In the last sequence of the Fate route we see the "Continuation of the Dream" where Saber gets sent back to her timeline and finally dies after her final battle.
And just like that she entered my Top 3 female characters.
