This is repulsive stuff, both from Robert Buckland (who rejoices in the title Justice Secretary) & the Mail, to whom he gave an interview on Valentine’s Day (insert your own ironic comment).

Misleading, fascist-adjacent (at best) & racist. [Short thread] https://twitter.com/mckinneytweets/status/1362013810308091905
Let’s start with the racism. It’s hardly a coincidence that the Mail’s attacks on the ‘celebrities’ who spoke out against deportations to Jamaica recently are illustrated with pics of two black women: Thandie Newton & Naomi Campbell.
Next, attacks on lawyers resume. We are, according to Buckland, ‘taking the public for a ride’ with challenges to deportation (ie doing our jobs by stopping the state acting illegally). This stuff (+ other current Tory initiatives👇) is textbook far-right https://twitter.com/AlasdairMack66/status/1361765427634970624?s=20
Next we’re told of plans to restrict Article 3 of the ECHR, which bans torture & inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Exactly what is envisaged isn’t yet clear but it can only mean the govt is happy exposing ‘foreign criminals’ to a risk of inhuman/degrading treatment.
It may well be right, as per @mckinneytweets in the @freemovementlaw piece, that the aim is to make it lawful to send seriously ill people to face avoidable suffering/death thru lack of treatment. What can it be about ‘foreign criminals’ which makes that acceptable to the Tories?
Will the govt succeed in restricting Article 3? I doubt it: the UK remains bound to comply with the ECHR.

But that isn’t the point, of course - the point is that it is going to enjoy trying, & calling down abuse (& worse) on the heads of lawyers & judges who try to stop it.
Buckland said it ‘breaks his heart’ that laws protecting the vulnerable are ‘abused in undeserving immigration cases’🤔

@robertbuckland save us the crocodile tears. Is facilitating the advance of fascism what you want to be remembered for? Do your job & defend the rule of law.
