When asked if they support the Biden administration’s plan to fully restore the US program of accepting refugees, 49% of all Americans support it, and 39% oppose.
But support rises to 55% in favor and 33% against when rebuilding the program is linked to a central plank in the new US administration’s plan, the opportunity of direct involvement through sponsoring refugees, such as through local churches, neighborhood groups and schools.
A striking finding is that refugee sponsorship makes the policy both more popular among liberals, and less unpopular among conservatives – something that is rare in a time of deep polarization.
Religious Americans are more supportive of welcoming refugees when given the opportunity to sponsor, with the largest effect among Catholics, who support the proposal by a 9-point margin (50-41%). Even among Evangelicals, 42% support the administration’s policy (while 45% oppose)
Strongest support comes from Americans under 45 (65-19%) and from Black Americans (67-13%), whose support rises by 14% with the chance for direct involvement.
