The military coup in #Myanmar has brought a sudden halt to the democratic transition.

The coup cannot go unchallenged. But the international response must be realistic about its leverage over the generals. 🧵

Our briefing ⇉ http://bit.ly/3plTrY9
The immediate objective should be to deter deadly violence against protesters.

Western and Asian partners should keep up the pressure in urging the military to show restraint.
Sanctions can target those responsible for the coup and military interests but should spare the population and the economy.
Arms sales to Myanmar should stop or be suspended.

Stopping or suspending sales would not only send a strong signal but could also weaken the regime’s capabilities by constraining its capacity to maintain existing equipment.
Foreign governments need to maintain channels of communication with the military regime and continue to press the generals to reverse course.

Isolating Myanmar would equate to abandoning its people at a time when international support matters most.
