New report đŸ’„đŸ’„

The future of steel is a test of the Government’s mettle.

They cannot deliver on the promise of ‘levelling up’ nor put the UK on the path to net-zero without a commitment to decarbonise the steel sector. We need a plan for green steel.

Steel accounts for almost a tenth of global emissions and 15% of the UK's industrial emissions. Decarbonisation is vital.

At the same time, low-carbon steel will be at the heart of a Green New Deal, supplying the materials and products for green industries and infrastructures.
Steel is the beating heart of communities across the UK, sustaining good, unionised jobs and extensive supply chains.

Wages in the sector are 28% higher than the UK average and 46% higher than wages in Wales and Yorkshire & the Humber.
There's an urgent need for ambition. The industry's investment cycles are decades long, which means to put the UK on the pathway to being a green leader, we must act now.

A world-leading pathway to green steel can help secure a share of a $2.5 trillion dollar market.
Abandoning the sector does not constitute a green jobs plan. Steelwork closures would still mean the UK has to import primary steel, often sourced from producers with lower environmental standards, offshoring but not reducing emissions.

A transformative surge in investment needs to be matched with a green industrial strategy that’s based on an ambitious, credible pathway toward decarbonisation. A plan for steel must be shaped and driven by the workforce.
Momentum for action is growing. Our report is backed by a broad coalition, from Miriam Cates MP, Conservative MP for Penistone & Stockbridge, to @Ed_Miliband to @UKSteel__ to @CommunityUnion and @GreenNewDealUK
We know the technologies and pathways to deliver a green and thriving future for the industry.

The hydrogen-based HYBRIT steel plant in Sweden shows one route.

What we need is backing from employers and government for a credible, innovative pathway.
We need Green New Steel.

Low-carbon steel must weave through the heart of an ambitious net-zero future. We have the technologies and skills to deliver it. In the year of COP26, and to secure a strong recovery, now is the time for ambition. ✹🌿 https://www.common-wealth.co.uk/interactive-digital-projects/a-test-of-mettle
