NEW: Our latest blog on the stark impact of the first lockdown's reduced traffic levels on road casualty numbers. #VisionZero #RoadDanger https://actionvisionzero.org/2021/02/16/vision-zero-more-on-the-case-for-traffic-reduction-the-dramatic-impact-of-the-first-lockdown-on-road-casualties/
/ Provisional UK casualty data is now available for the 1st half of 2020. Road casualties fell by 25% for Jan-Jun 2020 (compared to Jan>June 2019); traffic levels fell by 14%. It's clear that less traffic = fewer casualties.

/ Looking at London, using @TfL's new #VisionZeroLDN dashboard, we can see that between March & June 2020 (lockdown 1), fatal & serious casualties were down by 45% & pedestrian casualties fell by around 67%. Traffic volumes in turn were down by between 15-60%.
/ There is an ongoing increase in traffic volumes in Great Britain contributing to the difficulties in reducing road casualties. Traffic volumes rose by 17% between 2010 & 2019, from 262bn to 307bn vehicle miles. During this period, road fatalities fell by just 5%. #VisionZero
/ The link between traffic volumes & casualty numbers has been made before (see Todd Litman's work & our previous blogs). With traffic volumes returning to higher levels, there will inevitably be a rise in road casualties. #VisionZero #RoadDanger
/ Lockdown has shown that reducing people's exposure to motor vehicles can result in dramatic declines in road casualties. We must use this knowledge as we #BuildBackBetter, to begin again to reduce no.s of those killed & injured on our roads. #VisionZero https://actionvisionzero.org/2021/02/16/vision-zero-more-on-the-case-for-traffic-reduction-the-dramatic-impact-of-the-first-lockdown-on-road-casualties/
