I worry that the same people who have had to tackle the pandemic now have to tackle the huge backlog of #NHS work caused by the pandemic.

No respite on the horizon for the NHS for a long while yet.

I think we need urgent strategies to manage burn out&pace ourselves - Thread: https://twitter.com/gmb/status/1361942675029688320
We need to add redundancy into our own clinical working lives - I’ve booked firebreaks throughout 2021 and half of 2022 so I can add in clinics or move clinics - creating space to ensure my routine patients get seen while my team can take some annual leave.
We need to look at recruitment - we were running on empty before the pandemic with long waits for services such as routine follow up appointments - simply put we need more trained permanent staff. Not paying the same staff to do more as locums. This leads to burn out.
We need to book annual leave (not save it up as we can’t travel) and encourage everyone to take leave and book it in advance. We need to respect leave and not use texts/WhatsApp’s/Teams meetings while people are away. Everyone needs mental downtime from this.
We need plans in case this happens again (likely). Mandatory critical care upskilling for all permanent staff would be a start. Actual training, not virtual.

We need all COVID monies to be paid. Anyone still waiting for first wave extra work to be paid? Yep thought so. Lots.
We all need to be extra kind to each other and cut each other some slack. Many staff have lost relatives and will be grieving. Many have seen death & suffering on an unimaginable scale (I know I have).

We can & will get through this together.
