/8 Reflections on the recent trial from Messier et al (a short thread) – especially on their ”attention control”-group. This is an amazing trial for many reason – suspect this will be top 5 most important papers of 2021. Link to paper https://bit.ly/3dltwO8
/8: The conclusion states ”Among patients with knee osteoarthritis, high-intensity strength training compared with low-intensity strength training or an attention control did not significantly reduce knee pain or knee joint compressive forces at 18 months.”
/8: and the last lines of the conclusion reads ” The findings do not support the use of high-intensity strength training over low-intensity strength training or an attention control in adults with knee osteoarthritis. ”
/8: Been looking forward to this trial for years. Their choice of ”attention control” is highly interesting. If we look at original protocol ( https://bit.ly/3arr8n1 ) we see that ”attention control” is in fact really well conducted patient education to support self-management
/8: The dose of self-management training (my choice of terminology for this) was ”60-minute group workshops biweekly for the first 6 months and monthly thereafter (total of 24 sessions over 18 months)”.
