I don’t understand how the energy use in Texas right now could be so any high that it could jeopardize the entire grid - in contrast with the middle of summer when air conditioners are blasting on high across the state?

From what I can tell, all the power plants are independently owned and operated - so ERCOT can only recommend that they do certain things (like winterization) but they can’t require it.
Who’s genius idea was this setup, to start with?
Look, I’m no commie, but I’ll never understand the mentality of people who believe essential public services should be privatized and run like a business. There are PLENTY of ways to make a fortune in America that do not involve jeopardizing the foundations of our society.
