1. Men should stop raping women.
All women know this. Good men know this.
2. I’ve been to a few parties in my time, and in my experience, whenever a man falls asleep on a couch, after a few drinks, the worst he could expect to happen is to have someone grab a marker pen and draw on a silly moustache.
3. But if a woman falls asleep, she has to fear being raped. One incident washes off with a good scrub, but the other lasts forever and ruins lives.
4. If this nation can organise the acquisition of a joint strike fighter jet, why is it seemingly impossible for the Parliament to create an independent, neutral body that confidentially listens to and supports victims of violent sexual crime, assault and bullying?
5. If those of us elected to represent our communities cannot put our heads together and build a support system for the benefit of the thousands of women and men that work in the Parliament, then maybe we shouldn’t be here at all?
6. I am horrified at reports that a woman has been raped in this building. The consequences for Brittany Higgins, her family, and all who love her will last a lifetime.
7. We must do something to properly support victims. But at the heart of the matter, is that men must stop raping women.
8. I support Celia Hammond taking on an important role in working with the Liberal Party whips and MPs to seek to improve standards and protect staff. And I understand she admirably put her hand up to take on this challenge.
9. But it is essential that there is a review into the workplace culture at Parliament House and electorate offices. In the interests of public confidence, and most importantly parliamentary and electorate office staff, that review should be independent with bipartisan oversight.
