🧵 THREAD: Idaho will start seeding its basketball state tournaments NEXT year with MaxPreps rankings. That gives us a chance to see how it would compare to the current system.

It would not affect who qualifies for state, just where they are placed in the bracket. #idpreps
Note: Take this with a big grain of salt as it appears some of the records in MaxPreps are inaccurate. Some teams are not entering their scores consistently. And COVID-19 reduced the amount of cross-district games. #idpreps
5A state tournament

The limited COVID-19 schedules lead to some laughable results. The top Boise-area team is Mountain View at No. 6 overall behind Lake City, which didn’t qualify for state. No way is that accurate. Matchups end up being not too bad though. #idpreps
4A state tournament

Again, limited schedules hamper the rankings. Middleton is No. 1 in the state media poll but No. 10 overall and a 7 seed via MaxPreps. Blackfoot did not win its district tournament and had to win a play-in game but is the top overall seed. #idpreps
3A state tournament

This is better. But Marsh Valley gets a lower seed than Snake River, which it beat twice for the district title. Bonners Ferry gets a bump from playing a lot of 1As. And Parma is too low at No. 7. #idpreps
2A state tournament

Getting better. I’d quibble with Grangeville at No. 1 overall. But they did beat Cole Valley and play a legit schedule against 1A Whitepine teams. You do get a district rematch in the 1st round with Cole Valley and New Plymouth though. #idpreps
1A D1 state tournament

This is pretty good. It gets Lapwai and Prairie on opposite sides. Lighthouse is three seeds behind Murtaugh, which it beat for the district title and went 2-1 against this season. So I don’t love that. #idpreps
1A D2 state tournament

MaxPreps nailed this one, in my opinion. I could make a couple arguments, but I’d be splitting hairs. I’d love to see this bracket this year. #idpreps
To recap, be careful what you wish for. There’s no guarantee these MaxPreps rankings will be any better than the current system. I’d say it’s a step in the right direction. But you need a committee to smooth out any strange outcomes from the computer. #idpreps
