A common genre of disaster tweet is someone making a snarky comment that blames disaster survivors for the disaster because of their state’s political affiliation.

This is a problem for several reasons but the big one is that generally the same communities that tend to be most impacted by disasters are the same ones that are most likely to be kept from voting.
I wrote about this a few months ago right before the election.

Mainers — including King— have a depth of understanding about what it’s like to have to make it through cold winters without the needed resources. It would be great to see that empathy extended to people who are trying to survive yet another disaster in the midst of a pandemic.
(It’s also pretty hypocritical to act like Mainers don’t vote for extremely shitty politicians who don’t take risk seriously and I would hope that folks in other states would help us next time we’re in need.)
Mainers aren’t allowed to criticize how other states vote until we figure out the second district. I thought we had agreed on this. Jeez
