Climate change:
We're still talking about the future.
Look around you.
Think beyond temperature.
What is temperature? Temperature is the measure of energy in a material.
Energy makes stuff happen.
More energy.
More happens.
Temperature is only one measure, of many.
2. You can disregard the details. More energy moves stuff farther faster.
Like cold air. Cold air is stuff. Energy moves it.
Trying to understand it all through temperature is going the long way around.
On the same day there is 1.3 C more temperature than there was 100 years ago,
3. Energy is also expressing itself on higher average wind speeds than 100 years ago.
It can be no other way. People want to ask, "Did climate change cause this weather?"
Wrong question.
The climate is changed. The process continues, but the climate is greatly changed already.
4. Weather is an attribute of climate. Different climate, different weather. Higher energy climate means faster winds, larger air masses moving farther faster, more water in valor form, bigger rains.
5. When you push down the gas pedal on your car, the temperature in the cylinders increases. That increased temperature makes the gases want to get through to the tailpipe sooner. That process makes your car go faster.
We're not going around measuring the temperatures in engines.
6. We just know that when we push down the gas pedal we go faster. But - it's all the same. We can't add carbon and energy to the system today and say, "Well, when we reduce our emissions in 2037 ..."
When you push down the gas pedal, when does your car speed up? 30 years?
7. We're going a little faster every day. Yes, the carbon captures the energy as heat and the thermometer shows it, but - every process on Earth has more energy in it. Faster. That "temperature" doesn't stay in the air. It's in *everything.*
Because that's how it works.
