A couple of points regarding Trump's comments on McConnell in this statement put out by him today: a thread. 1/ https://twitter.com/eyokley/status/1361794974262648837
Trump blames McConnell for being "rapidly driven" down "from Majority Leader to Minority Leader" in the Senate. In reality, that was probably Trump's own doing — his insistence on election fraud in Georgia and continued attacks on democracy itself drove turnout for Dems there. 2/
Trump blames GA losses on McConnell due to $600 COVID stimulus bill in late Dec. Trump demanded that be $2K per person, but only after the bill had already been passed. That stymied the whole situation — even supposing that was the reason for the losses, that's Trump's doing. 3/
Trump continues being Trump in his statement, telling his side of the story and claiming McConnell "begged" for an endorsement in his reelection last year. Trump takes credit for boosting his poll numbers, but really? It was McConnell's race to lose. 4/
"Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again." BUT TELL US HOW YOU REALLY FEEL, DONALD. 5/
Far be it for me to defend McConnell against Trump. Not my place to do so, and the infighting is frankly *chef's kiss* 6/
But this is a transparent play by Trump to see how much political clout he really has at this point. To see if he can influence McConnell to resign as Minority Leader, or to see if GOP Sens decide to force him out. 7/
Time will tell, I guess. But whether McConnell leaves his post or not, it seems clear that there will be a definite "old hat" GOP wing, and a Trump wing of the party. Who will end up with the most support? My money's on the latter, unfortunately. 8/end
