Wonder Egg Priority episode 6 was awesome! I am IN LOVE with this series and I hope y'all are enjoying it too!
Here's a thread about some of the many visual observations I made and some of my usual random ramblings!
Here's a thread about some of the many visual observations I made and some of my usual random ramblings!
This shot foreshadows how Ai is going to be more vulnerable in this ep. The bed tent fits with the idea of a shell that encloses Ai. However, the tent is slightly open and the mother invades that open space meaning that she'll do something big in this ep while Ai is vulnerable.
My immediate thoughts were "Oh no", followed by "Oh NO", followed by an extremely loud "OH NOOOOO!!!!!" when this scene happened.
The gloomy sky covered by clouds is heavily shown throughout this episode and it serves as a reflection of Ai's mind. The clear sky is being blocked, meaning that Ai is lacking clarity and she's frustrated, especially when topics like Sawaki are brought up.
Ai is shown slightly separated from the group, emphasizing how she feels detached. She's in her own mind, thinking about thoughts that don't pertain to the group. This is wonderfully shown in the third shot where she's the only person onscreen with a huge amount of empty space.
I've been staring at these damn things for the past 30 minutes and I still don't know how to interpret all of these pendants. I'm just going to take a stab at it in the next two tweets in this thread! Also, uhhh, Madoka Magica vibes? Oh no...
Neiru's pendant has snakes which are symbolic of ideas like sin and healing. There's also the crown on top, fitting for a company president. Ai's pendant reminded me of ideas pertaining to astrology with the stars and the moon which could parallel Ai's concerns about the future.
Momoe's pendant is a tiara??? Regardless, it looks like a feminine crown, fitting for Momoe who wants to be recognized as a woman. Rika's pendant looks like it's a perfume bottle which suits her perfectly as someone who takes pride in how she presents herself as a woman.
Alright, let's talk about those animals! For Neiru, I'd associate the snake with ideas of healing considering that she's still currently healing from her wound. There's also the idea of shedding skin, hinting at Neiru's disdain for her scar and desiring her skin to be healed.
Rika's animal is a turtle which is very fitting for someone who likes to hide their marks and maintain a tougher exterior. They also symbolize persistence because, y'know, it's Rika, she hella persistent!
Momoe's animal is a crocodile which is associated with ideas of protection. This makes sense for Momoe, especially since, as we saw in episode 4, she is seen as a protective figure. They're also associated with wisdom, so I'm curious to see if that'll hold true for Momoe.
Ai's chameleon makes sense. Like a chameleon, she tends to maintain a low profile in places like school. There's also the fact that Ai can surprisingly adapt to a lot of situations, just like how chameleons easily adapt to different environments.
Ahhh, I love these shots! These long shots allow us to see the ample amount of space behind Ai, and there's a shot at a dutch angle that focuses on the mirror behind Ai. So much is done here to anticipate that there's something that's going to appear behind Ai. It's genius!
Ai is being reflected in the egg yolk that's in the bowl, so when looking at this shot we have to associate the yolk with how Ai is currently feeling. She's currently vulnerable, outside of her shell, feeling confined as she's having dinner with her mother and Sawaki.
When this huge announcement is dropped on Ai, there's an extreme close-up shot of the meat SMASHING the egg yolk, with the yolk permeating throughout the dish. This reveal emotionally shocked Ai, and in the third shot, we see an instance of suffocation imagery with the doorway.
I want to know what's going on in terms of Rika's family life because if she's implying that she was sexually abused, I want to give her all the hugs in the world. Momoe is understandably pissed that Rika would call her uncle a potential abuser. Still though, hugs for Rika!
I think that it's brilliant to show Ai fighting an invisible monster that slowly becomes more visible while Ai slowly realizes her romantic feelings for Sawaki. It shows how Ai is gaining clarity on feelings that she didn't want to acknowledge.
This was my favorite shot from the clip. This show has been using symbolism pertaining to ideas of "looking" and "seeing" since the beginning, and it reappears here with this reflective eye shot that happens right when the monster, and simultaneously her feelings, became clear.
Water is being used here to symbolize rebirth as Ai is about to make a big step in her life. There are also ideas of clarity with the clear water and her submerged thoughts coming to her conscious mind with her head poking out of the water.
Remember that gloomy sky I mentioned which was always present when Ai felt confused and gloomy throughout the episode? Well, now that Ai has a clear mind, the clear sky reflects that clarity.
Ai is finally going back to school! She even slightly moves her hair to reveal both of her eyes to show she has better clarity on herself while also showing Sawaki, the person she likes, her eyes which he called "charming". I still don't trust him yet, but I want him to be good!
