I wanted to take this time to speak about this masterpiece, Awaken My Love by Childish Gambino. This album was released in 2016 and I decided to listen to it for the first time this year, alongside the rest of Gambino's discography.
Projects like Camp and Because the Internet stuck out to me and they were good. I would not say they were at that amazing tier and it made me question whether or not Gambino would deliver a project that can be on that level of amazing.
Then comes Awaken My Love, where Gambino flawlessly executes one of the greatest left turns I have ever seen from an artist. Earlier in his discography, Gambino was making Pop Rap mixed with Contemporary R&B, utilizing the up-and-coming sad boy rap scene.
With Awaken My Love, Gambino switches off into a vintage funk mixed with a neo-soul sound that I did not see coming. In this project we see Gambino utilize his vocals in a way that he previously had never done, taking advantage of the autotune in the best way he can.
Production wise, this album is amongst the best ever, with Gambino taking advantage of this vintage funk sound and adding a more modern twist to it.
My absolute favorite song on this album is The Night Me and Your Mama Met. A funny title, yet with so much meaning to it, especially since it is transitioning from the song Baby Boy where he is addressing his son.
This song uses just instrumentals to play out that night where his life changed and started a family. He is trying to convey the feeling and emotion of meeting that person he ended up creating a life with.
No words can convey the feelings he went through in that moment, as it is so near and dear to him that only the instrumentation can project that emotion.
Awaken My Love is a masterpiece, as it stands as one of the greatest albums of all time. I know not many people may share this sentiment, but I believe it deserves to be on the level of a To Pimp a Butterfly (TPAB being a modern classic).
That is all I have to say, Awaken My Love is a 10/10 album, my first 10/10 of the year in terms of the music industry. Thank you for reading this.
