Good defense often becomes synonymous with boring, but there are ways to pressure an offense under control. Takeaway checks rarely work at high levels, but systematic schemes to pick up the tempo can be effective.

Check out this thread on how UVA & Army deployed a few 👇
Free Doubles: Follow the Dodge from X

After a pick at X, following the dodger puts #22 in a great position to double since his man is a difficult outlet w/o rolling back.

Even if the double isn’t there, you’ll be in a better support position as the ball moves upfield.
Free Doubles: Island Roll-Back

Knowing your teammates and opponents is huge here. If you’re teammate gets caught @ the island in a v-hold or 2 handed wrap (like this), expect the roll-back.

The on-ball defender gets the CT, but his teammate was ready if not.
Free Double: Inside-Roll

This is another example of following the dodger up from X - watch #11 after the pick. This is a great way to support SSDMs in big / littles.

It also shows we can follow from top down too if the dodger is tied up.
Sliding to the Roll-Back

Timing up a slide to meet the dodger on a roll-back is a great way to put controlled pressure on an offense, since you can get to their hands before they see you leave.

As dodgers get closer to the heart, these opportunities open up.
Sliding to the Alley Roll-Back

Here UVA slides both adjacent and from the crease. Ideally, you only want to send one guy, but this just goes to show how the great timing here doesn’t allow Army to expose UVA on the backside.

Timing is the 🔑 on these slides / doubles
