Something I learned while starting DORD that’s applicable to job searching. YOU ARE THE PRIZE. There’s this idea that we need to cater ourselves to every job and pray they notice us. But babes, you are the god damn prize. And a good environment can see that.
I’m not saying I speak for every founder, but every single person DORD interacts with, I’m looking for talent I can invest in when I can afford to. I’ll give my right hand for kickass talent and people I can grow with who want to learn and are excited.
The job is a job. They aren’t the prize. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll discover leaders who will grow you and train you, and they become invaluable connections. But babes, I mean this from the bottom of my heart, YOU ARE THE PRIZE.
I don’t want to work for a company that doesn’t want me or wants a pretend me. I want a boss who sees my ability to adapt, my willingness to learn, and can see potential in me. Maybe things aren’t perfect, maybe I don’t get paid bank, but I’m getting developed.
People who care about the long term health of their business invest in talented people and foster talent. People who are obsessed with fulfilling their egos go through employees.
Understand this, you deserve to find a boss who hypes you up, wants to see you grow, and gets excited when they envision a place for you at their organization. In the HR world, you are the prize. Not the other way around.
