The gate is open. No one is keeping it. You can find almost any movie you want on the Internet if you decide to look for it. If it’s not legally available, somebody pirated it. If your taste is confined to a tiny circle of things you already know you like, that’s on you.
In the year 2021, when it is possible to find nearly any film from any country, legally or illegally, high quality or low quality, if you have any sort of tech device with Internet access, the only gatekeeper is you. Be curious. Don’t gatekeep yourself.
There are people on this website who have nothing, in terms of resources. And many of them know more about the history of world cinema than a lot of the “professionals” on here. Because they are curious. They have open minds. They never stop feeding their brains.
Conversely, if you are not a curious person, if you are content to stay within a narrow range of viewing options, you need to be honest and *own* that. Do not make the curiosity of other people into a personal attack on your own viewing choices. That’s your insecurity talking.
The person of restless curiosity is the person who keeps the gate open and is constantly urging other people to walk through it and discover new things. This is the opposite of gatekeeping.
Don’t try to make your own lack of curiosity into someone else’s problem.
