In our Programme for Government we commit to strongly advocate for the #ruleoflaw. But what is the rule of law ? 1/9

The @VeniceComm of @CoE has developed a #ruleoflaw checklist that includes:
• Legality & Legal certainty
• Equality and non-discrimination
• Access to Justice 2/9

The #ruleoflaw is also one of fundamental values of the #EuropeanUnion, enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union.

So what are we doing to protect and promote the #ruleoflaw in the EU? 3/9

Rule of Law Report:
We welcomed the @EU_Commission annual Rule of Law Report. It monitors #ruleoflaw across the EU, including in Ireland, based on

• Justice Systems
• Anti-Corruption Framework
• Media Pluralism
• Other Institutional Issues related to checks and balances  4/9

Guardian of the Treaties:

We support the important role of the @EU_Commission and Commissioner @VeraJourova in protecting the EU’s values.

Ireland’s membership of, and commitment to, the European Union is founded in our Constitution on our “shared values”

EU Budget Conditionality:

Ireland strongly supported the introduction of conditionality in the EU’s budget. The conditionality links Member State access to EU funds to adherence to the rule of law.

Our citizens demand no less.

Article 7 Treaty on European Union:

Ireland supports formal procedures to address concerns regarding rule of law in specific Member States when they arise.

We hope that resolution can be found through open and positive dialogue between Member States.

@EUCourtPress CJEU Decisions:

Ireland respects decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

This is part of our commitments as a Member State of the #EuropeanUnion.

No EU Member State is perfect, including Ireland.

But we know that adherence to the rule of law in Ireland since independence has lead to substantial social and economic progress.

We all need to work together to protect and promote #ruleoflaw across the #EuropeanUnion. 9/9
