super hot spicy controversial take incoming: i want to think critically about the media i enjoy. i like seeing other people's critiques of the media i enjoy, especially if they hadn't occurred to me or i'm not sure abt them or i totally disagree.
if i have more than a passing casual interest in something, whether i'm hyperfixated or just really like it, i want to think about its complexities. i can't like something and think about it a lot without wanting to build a nuanced understanding of it.
i can't get behind this hierarchy of media where something can be too dumb to criticize. if there's enough there for me to have a sustained interest in it, there's enough there for me to critique it.
i, too, don't like the mentality where kids cartoons are "irredeemable media" and u need a "i consume all these things critically!!" disclaimer on ur interests list. but analysis doesn't have to mean self flagellation. you can critique the things you like, and still like them!
i don't think it's bad to feel hurt and defensive when first faced with that criticism. having emotions is fine, that's how ppl work. i do think it's bad to get mad that criticism even exists, and write off not just the criticism but the idea of criticizing.
tldr thinking is good and people should do it more.
