I can see my breath in my room right now. Last night my dad got frostbite because the house was so cold. He also uses a machine to sleep and because our area of the city is low income we haven’t had constant electricity so he hasn’t slept in two days. When the electricity does
come on for 20 minutes every 5 hours (I’ve been timing it) the house barely warms up and just as soon as we get kind of warm it goes off again. The city’s reservoirs are starting to freeze and many low income areas are going on 24 hours without power.
Right now the high income areas like Waterford or Belle Pointe still have power, and the hotels are raising their prices. I have no idea what the various homeless people who hang out in the square are doing right now. The roads are iced over and workers are having to still go
To their jobs, mostly Walmart employees. The city is pumping water from the south side to the north because the reserves are frozen so people are either without power or water. Black neighborhoods are being effected the most right now and we have people from blue states
Saying it is what we deserve. No one deserve to be cold and hungry and thirsty. And we know blue states aren’t any better off because dems pretend to care about the climate crisis but end up doing nothing. This is bad. Texas is apart of the many red states who are climate deniers
It’s really hard to get the resources we need to combat severe weather like this because our politicians like Greg Abbott have denied the growing threat of climate change. The south is largely populated by black people. Saying you don’t care about the south is saying
You don’t care that black families are dying. Yes poor white people are suffering too. We’re all suffering but we have to pay attention and address the negligence from our governments that is hurting poor folks and minorities the most.
Income disparity is why some places on the grid are getting electricity and others aren’t. I live by a hospital and usually my grid isn’t affected, but I also live close to low income areas that college students live in and poor black and white families too. So the hospital is
using a generator and my neighborhood is going without. Businesses have power and so does the university but these buildings remain closed and people continue to freeze and go hungry. Schools are shut down, yet I have teachers who for some reason are saying I still need to
complete their work, even though WiFi is down and power is out. My school has a large population of poor black students, and they will not be able to complete assignments. But the rich kids will and they will also have warm houses to fall asleep in tonight. Students are
fighting to stay warm rn, we are not thinking about your assignments. It is an issue to not have resources for school under a pandemic and now we have a climate issue, and we are still not prepared. This is a failed state. We see that in our education and in working class
people’s lives, as homes are cold and business remain warm. Earlier I had the thought that I would rather have electricity than water. How fucked is it that I had that thought? But the reality is that is one of the many thoughts Texans are having rn. We are playing game of
“Would you rather” with our government n the electric companies. They deny the climate crisis, profit off of our suffering and they cause us to fight to see “who is more oppressed?” The state does not care about working class people. The power grid being used for profit rather
than as a tool to protect people from freezing is an issue. Years ago, we had a freeze like this happen, and the government decided to not put proper infrastructure in place because it was a waste of resources and time to them, because global warming is not real to them.
Because spending money on human needs is not necessary to them. If they can’t spend money to make more money they see no point. We are freezing. People are dying. How much more will we endure before It is too late?
Capitalism has been made out to be untouchable by the 1%. They stay warm right now while we freeze and go hungry. They control the power (literally) and we are having to take what scraps we can get. If you don’t think capitalism is the issue, then at least admit:
People deserve warmth, security and shelter in times like this — we are not getting that, so IT IS an issue.
