If you have nvr driven in snow or ice here's a few tips from a past NE Ohio Lake Effect Snow commuter.
1.Dont use any liquids or hot water shock methods for your windshield. Those youtube videos are liesssss
2.Always stay two car lengths behind other vehicles. If someone slides it gives them room, without you having to also hit the breaks and possibly slip.
3. KNOW UR MUFUCKIN DRIVE
All Wheel? Front Wheel? That weird catty corner wheel thang?
If you get stuck you need to know which wheels to focus on getting traction under.
4. If you have or can get kitty litter
A.creates traction in ice or snow if you get stuck
B. If you have front wheel drive or a light car of a truck with a flat bed put that in the back of you vehicle to weigh it down, it will help
*srsly if u have dirt or sand to use for the counterbalance it helps in cars like
5. How to control a slide.
A. Follow it.
B. Do not try to break sharply
C. Control your steering INTO where your car is pulling
D.Pump Breaks lightly until you can slow to a stop or rejoin the flow of traffic
You. Cannot. Fight. The. Ice. And. Your. Car.
Gravity and mass are not in your control.
You hit the breaks you will slide worse, you try to pull the car it will flip.
If you can please steer into it.
6. If you can slide somewhere flat, a yard, a field, a parking lot, aim your best for that. Seriously. It is better to piss somebody off then to spin into traffic.
I have spun off roads into fields coasted and pumped til I could stop and then turned around and driven out
*side note this is the longest scariest 30-60 secs of your life even in a place with no other drivers.
7. If you drift off the road or otherwise get stuck.
Stay. In. The. Damn. Car.
If there is no where safe to walk or a place you can safely walk to IN YOUR EYESIGHT. Stay put.
Exposure always wins.
Wind and Wet cannot be beat.
Seriously, you could probably survive a full 24 hours bundled up in a car. With the heat off. Snow insulates very well.
*bonus tip if you are stuck and your exhaust is covered. Turn it off.
8. Call a tow. Turn in all your lights and hazards. Wait patiently, liste for the truck so you can flag or yell em down if you have to from the car.
9. I suggest you tell them to pull you out backwards. Chances are as you drove into the snow you buried the nose in light slipper fluffy stuff. No grip. Bad vibes.
The stuff in the back ur full car weight packed down, likely in a lil slope. Use it. It'll save you
Seriously my exes dad got us (in upstate Ny Lake effect snow) stuck I suggested that, no one listened for 3+ hrs, we got pulled out in 15 mins once I yelled it to the dude myself 😆
