I saw a documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, a 19 year-old who was able to convince major investors to invest in Theranos, a start-up that claimed it is building a small machine that could run any blood test at home, with tiny blood, to detect medical conditions.
It was all a lie.
Holmes was obsessed with Steve Jobs, she dropped out of Stanford at 19 and wore black turtlenecks like he did. She faked her deep voice. and hired the same people who worked at Apple, they left her later on because it was all fake.
She also used the same ad to promote her product
Holmes raised 700M for her company that was valued at $9 BILLION, and became the youngest self-made billionaire. She was the Steve Jobs of Medicine even though she never had a medial degree.
The board of Theranos was all white rich politicians who never had any medical experience
She was able to last for 12 YEARS in this scam, met world leaders and was on the cover of every magazine.
She refused to share details of her machine because it never existed and forged blood tests.
Her employees were always quitting and no one dared to speak because of lawsuits.
The fallout came when a Wall Street Journal reporter published his investigation into Theranos and found that the blood-testing machine, named Edison, couldn't give accurate results, so Theranos was running its samples through the same traditional blood-testing machines 😂
Theranos conducted countless fault blood tests on many people using the Edison machine at the company, after opening testing sites across Walgreens.
Lab scientists had to dilute the blood to get results, and Edison was inaccurate giving several results for the same blood test.
By OCTOBER 2016, Theranos had shut down its lab operations. Elizabeth founded it in 2003.
In 2018, Homes was charged with massive fraud. A verdict is expected by summer 2021.
She is currently married to a heir of a hospitality company and living a lavish life.
It is a remarkable story of a woman who faked it till she made it, and was never questioned by anyone because of “white privilege”.
The documentary is called The Inventor: Out for Blood at Silicon Valley.
There is also an amazing podcast, the DropOut that tells the full story.
