I can’t express how much this article frustrates me, esp by pitting teachers and unions against science. Where is the trust in teachers? Teachers are underpaid / working the equivalent of 2 jobs! Where’s the good faith that they may actually have students best interests at heart? https://twitter.com/voxdotcom/status/1361329458951704579
despite what article says there is likely transmission in schools. It may be safe to open in low transmission areas, of course I agree schools should be a priority. But its a myth that covid does not circulate in schools and many have willfully believed bc they want it to be true
Here’s a very good thread summarizing the variants, schools, children and risk https://twitter.com/dgurdasani1/status/1346362159446577154
Another note on covid in schools https://twitter.com/dr2nisreenalwan/status/1360317869536514050
Dr Hyde has a thread that catalogues covid transmission in children and schools going back to March 2020 https://twitter.com/drzoehyde/status/1336612124835995648
I think what’s lost here is this is not a zero sum game. People jump to the extremes: “students mental health is deteriorating therefore they must be in school”- while that may be true, it also does a toll on students mental health to have a teacher get infected with covid.
And as an aside, maybe part of that mental health crisis would be alleviated by lowering our expectations of students (and teachers! And all workers!) during a national crisis.
A lot of what the unions are doing is fighting for safer learning environments - they’re on your side here. They would’ve have dedicated their lives to the profession if it were otherwise.
