The Rise and Fall of... AMR ZAKI

How did he go from Premier League top scorer to ‘the most unprofessional player ever’?

Find out below👇👇
‘The Egyptian Gladiator’ joined Wigan on loan back in 2008/09, with chairman Dave Whelan likening Zaki to Alan Shearer

After an impressive pre season, he scored on his debut against West Ham
A brace versus Hull followed, giving Zaki a dream start of 3 goals in 2 games
The Egyptian added a fourth to his tally, a classic poacher’s goal against Sunderland

He was now joint PL top scorer with Jermain Defoe
A defensive howler by Liverpool at Anfield (what’s new?😉) gifted Zaki his 6th...
... followed by an absolute ring-a-ding ping to send him back to the top of the scoring charts
The Egyptian then suffered an injury which kept him out for 3 games, after which he came back and scored two more penalties taking his tally to 10

It was there where the goals dried up and the good times were to end for Zaki at the JJB
In April 2009, Zaki failed to turn up for training after international duty and multiple times thereafter

He was later fined considerably more than the average person in Britain earns in a year

Steve Bruce called him “the most unprofessional player he has ever worked with”
He scored ten times in 2008/09, but with Nicolas Anelka eventually winning the golden boot on just 19 goals, Amr Zaki will always be remembered as a ‘what could have been’
