If anyone up north is confused about what's going on in the south and why people are so worried/afraid/angry: Texas leadership is telling people in residential areas to "conserve power" and to "prepare for this to last multiple days", in 8 degree weather, while most of us (1/6)
(about 4 million as I'm writing this) have no power at all. I would say about half these homes, my own included, are not run on gas, so we rely on electricity to do anything, like to cook or boil water to make it safe to drink (something that has to be done because city (2/6)
water tables are so low, after days of dripping/running faucets to prevent freezing and bursting, that contaminated water is all that's left). People cannot keep their children, elderly parents, or pets warm. People who rely on oxygen machines can't get air without power. (3/6)
Homes are sitting roughly at median of 45 degrees, with GOOD insulation, and still dropping, which puts anyone living in that condition at risk for hypothermia. Most homes here do not have good insulation. (4/6)
People are dying. @GovAbbott @GovAbbott @oncor @ERCOT_ISO @austinenergy have failed the people of #Texas. We were warned that this would happen in 2011 if we didn't improve infrastructure. Resign. #dallaspoweroutage #texaspoweroutage #TexasFreeze #TexasBlackout (6/6)
If you know anyone from here, or you're here and you're cold, find a warming station. Call 211 to find the one closest to you. https://www.wfaa.com/amp/article/weather/shelters-for-homeless-warming-stations-centers-north-texas-dallas-fort-worth-cold-weather/287-6a2525cb-347d-4dd7-acc9-7303f1073c50?__twitter_impression=true
If you're still here, consider donating to @ourcalling, who I read is responsible for the warming stations in Dallas, or to any homeless shelter or fire dept in Texas (also setting up stations).
One last thing I forgot to add: we keep seeing "rolling" or "rotating" blackouts on the news and social media. They we're not rotating. Some of us lost power between 2-5 am and just never got it back.
This thread REALLY blew up. I'm trying so hard to sift through comments to help those that are asking but there's a lot. I'm trying. PLEASE call 311 if you're in a city and 211 if you're rural. If you can't get to a warming station, go to your local fire dept. You're not alone.
