MY ALL TIME PET PEEVE. Women in history were not either ‘prostitutes’, ‘wives’ or ‘fainting damsels’. Women worked. I swear to god Dickens has way more women with jobs than modern-written ‘historical dramas’ https://twitter.com/MarissaLingen/status/1361720628320034820
Here is the census on women’s jobs in 1881. Overwhelmingly they were domestic servants, agricultural workers, and factory workers, but there’s all sorts of interesting jobs in there http://catsmeatshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/womens-work.html
So apparently I really have to finish my Victorian Working Women a-to-z I abandoned https://a-to-zoo.tumblr.com/
Aw that was a nice project and I learned all sorts of Interesting Facts. Too early to one of the Newsagents and Newsrooms Keepers of 1881 would have been Mrs W H Smith, who founded the empire https://tmblr.co/ZGcSNv1NszoOc
