F1 World Champions day 30: -1980, after having an impressive 79 campaign it all came together for the Williams Grand Prix Engineering team and their driver Alan Jones, born 02-11-46 (got this right today, having made a typo yesterday, Jody was born 1950, not 1920, opppss
fat thumbs) Alan had three period so f racing in F1, this being his 1sy from 1975 to 81. Born in Melbourne Australia Alan Stanley Jones he would become the 2nd Australian to take the F1 Drivers Title, Sir Jack Brabham being the 1st. Racing was in the family’s blood, Alans father
Stan had won the Australian GP in 1959, a feat Alan would also do in 1980. Alan started the season off from where he had left off in 79, although in stead of retiring from the race, Alan went on to hold pole, fastest lap taking the victory at the Argentine GP although apart from
a 2nd & 3rd place at the Brazilian and Belgium GP’s Alan would retire from 3 of the 1st 6 GP’s for this season with wins being taken by Rene Arnox for Renault at the Brazilian and South African GP’s, Piquet will take a clean sweep at Long Beach with Alan showing a glimmer of hope
at Zolder taking pole Didier Pironi would win this race with Carlos Reutemann taking the Monaco Crown. Following Monaco would be a Non-Championship race in Spain, tensions were boiling between the FISA and Formula One Constructors Association which was made up mostly of British
team representatives such as none other than Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosely. The FOCA teams were all about ground affect whereas the so called big three Renault, Alfa-Romeo and Ferrari had the turbo engines and therefore a power advantage. With drivers from the big 3 not racing
at Spain, the points did not count, although Jonesy got back to winning ways. At the French GP Jones took the win as he did at Williams home GP, Brans Hatch, Laffite took a win for Ligier in Germany, Jabouille grabbed a win for Renault in Austria whilst Piquet with picking up 2
more wins for Brabham-Ford. With 2 races left, Piquet was in front of Jonesy in the standings, although the Brabham of Piquet would fail to finish the next two races with Jones winning both in Canadian and Watkins Glen to more give Jonesy and Williams their respective titles in
1980. Whilst this would the 1st of many for Williams, this would-be Alan Jones’s one and only F1 Drivers Crown. Notable fact for this year saw the career of a multiple world champion being with Team McLaren in the shape of Alain Prost, who left for Renault the following year
returning to McLaren in 1984. Alan would get the call from Ferrari to drive for them in mid-1982 following the untimely death of Giles Villeneuve, he failed to give a quick enough answer with the Scuderia looking to Mario Andretti to drive the last two races of 1982. On a sad
note, there was the loss of Patrick Depailler at Hockenheim during a testing accident. Ferrari had a dismal season resulting in Scheckter retiring from F1, although lastly, how could we forget, another emergence of a top driver would be at Team Lotus in the form of Our
