The Attack of the Clones is Space Opera in vein of serials blending all sorts of mediums that didn’t care to pander what the masses craved
The mixture of medieval romance, politics, that 50s sci-fi/detective movie vibe and its excessive scale make it a masterful roller coaster.

The Battle of Geonosis part is a digital clebration, where Lucas unleashes a ton of new ideas visually and experimented with types of shots never seen before in Star Wars
Attack of the Clones pioneered and encouraged something as common and crucial as digital cinematography

The arena itself is a homage to Ray Harryhausen, something that will emphasize that atmospheric and beautiful presence of vintage tints through all the movie to create something unique

Then the love story so vilified as it so unfairly criticized
Lucas decides to abandon the romances over contemporary tropes
and pays homage to not only to classic cinema but focuses more on Medieval European Literature and Courteous Love.
A forbidden and more chivalrous romance

Something fascinating is that it goes from one aesthetic to another without problem.
The classy Sci-Fi/mystery is perfectly reflected in Jango's design, as well as in Kamino and its inhabitants, with that aesthetic taken from the stories of UFOs or Encounters of the Third Kind

The 50s are very present in Episode II and that makes me think that Episode II is special for Lucas.
The part of Dexter and the chase of the speeder drink directly from "American Graffiti", Lucas's film that honors that time when he was young.

The entire nighttime sequence on Coruscant is a homage to Blade Runner (1982) and Metropolis (1927). Is important to see these quotes thematically, Metropolis & Blade Runner are about capitalism, having its cities divided into an upper “level” and a low one
Like Coruscant in AOTC

Lucas was amazed not only over these vintage style of filmmaking, but experimental films above all. He likes to edit his films like documentaries thus avoids stuff like push ins or staging perfectly for the camera (e.g) to avoid indicating a more “cinematic” type of direction
Another aspect quite common in experimental films is the use of bizarre colors meeting forms. Something we of course can see on the Anakin vs Dooku fight
Not to mention the montage used

Lucas conveyed Star Wars all based on Sergei Eisenstein’s montage meaning the movies work and are narrated through visuals more than they are done by dialogue. Meaning are meant more as silent films
I muted this scene and yet the emotion is passed bc of acting & montage

The picnic scene is a homage to the Sound of Music settled before the arrival of dictatorship to Austria, in AOTC is where Anakin discussed dictatorship
And the Clones parallel nazis from Triumph of the Will inviting to look closer, expressing how dictatorships rise from inside

The acting is astounding.Hayden represents the emotionally oppressed Jedi under the influence of the corrupt Palpatine. His voice acting match that condition & the stylization of the 30s acting Lucas aimed plus use of rich facial expressions
This transition is from the same scene

Finally, it has the perfect structure for a middle chapter replicating the same of Episode V. If you love Empire Strikes Back I have no clue how could you not love Attack of the Clones, is its flip side; being narratively and thematically so tied and complex with one and other
As I always say, Episode II is a masterpiece. Very dense film thematically but at the same time quite light superficially, & that makes everyone not like it; but being an universally hated film translates into the bad quality people claim.
Look a simple shot yet cleverly placed:

And these are some quick “notes” that bring up graphically into consideration that there’s more going on in behind contrary as ppl say. Obviously, there’s far more in regarding characters & thematic development, I elaborated on an essay I’ll leave u here: https://boxd.it/1B1UcF
Hope these notes helped you to consider the film from a different perspective people never see but is far more thoughtful & interesting to do so, give it a try with an open mind.
Attack of the Clones is one of a kind, a masterpiece, I’ll never understand the biased hate it got

Got inspiration over this thread in Spanish, took some pics and notes I’ve been telling you all this time (see I’m not the only one to notice) and added more stuff to your consideration
