This has been happening a lot to me lately, so here is another thread for you writers, filmmakers, whomever. **deep breath**
When you have a finished screenplay and you're ready to shop it around, you don't just email producers and throw scripts at them. THIS IS NOT THE WAY. 1/
Sending an email with, "I know you're a producer and here's my project" is not only going to get deleted REALLY fast, but your name could be tarnished. That behavior is unprofessional and screams you don't know what you're doing. 2/
Think about it: If you were minding your own business and someone threw a burger into your lap and said, "eat this" would you do it? No, because who is this person and why are they lobbing stuff at me without asking permission 1st or seeing if I have the time to 'eat' it? 3/
Not to mention the fact that it's coming from a stranger. It's the same premise. You don't email and throw work at someone. And THEN get pissy when it's rejected (that's an entirely other thread, but rest assured that's a SURE fire way to never get anything produced) 4/
The best way to get things read is to create relationships with people. Get to know them. If you're a race car enthusiast and a producer is as well, now you have a common ground to 'bond' over on social media. Get to know the person. The script you've written.. 5/
may not even be in that producer's wheelhouse. You don't send a romcom to a horror producer. BUT! If you have a relationship you MAY be able to ask: hey, I have a romcom. I know it's not your genre, but do you know someone who would maybe be interested in this? 6/
But NEVER out of the gate. If you demand or just toss work at a producer expecting them to help you, you're a user. And you can be smelled a mile away. And you DO NOT want to stink in this industry bc it's a hard road to get to being a rose again. 7/
Also, DO NOT send a synopsis of your script in your first email. UNLESS the producer or company has specifically asked for it. But if it's a cold email (like the past few I've gotten) and it's: "I know you produce things. I have a script. I want you to make the movie." NOPE. 8/
Why? Because you're not respectful of the producer's time. You're overstepping boundaries. You've become a wildcard and no one wants to deal with those bc it's a hassle and comes with legalities. You're not going about it the right way. You're proving 9/
you don't do research, don't listen, and are demanding. Those emails are aggressive. No one wants to deal with that. So: cultivate a relationship. And NEWS FLASH: it's going to take a LOT of time. You're laying track. Trust is earned. 10/
Would YOU put your job future on the shoulders of someone who you don't know? Or sink millions of dollars into a biz venture of someone YOU DON'T KNOW? Not knowing any return investments, or whatnot you smart biz people look for? The point is, THIS IS NOT THE WAY. 11/
Look. I'm a helpful Hufflepuff by heart. But I'm NOT going to be used or abused. Those emails are going straight to my trash folder, and they usually get labeled as spam. I hate doing that but I'm nicer than most bc I'm telling you WHY. Please learn from this tweet. 12/
I WANT u all to succeed and make it. But there are rules. Protocols. And rules and protocols do not care about your feelings. Please learn from this thread. Thanks for reading it all! xoxo /End
