The worst thing about the Oilers is their identity and their asset/player management. They don't know what they want to be this season. It doesn't look like they want to tank and have a chance at a lottery pick but it doesn't look like they want to be a playoff team, either. /1
This affects the asset management aspect due to Holland and Tippett not knowing the best way to utilize players. They would rather have Tyson Barrie and Kris Russell rather than Caleb Jones and Ethan Bear, their future defenseman who look analytically inclined. /2
Holland bringing in Kahun near league-minimum was an insightful move. Kahun is a solid two-way player who's deadly from high-danger areas, something the Oilers desperately needed. Tippett failed to utilize him as such, attempting to make him more of a playdriver. /3
This leads to the most damning statement about the managerial's tenure. Holland and Tippett have proved they are not adequate enough for their respective roles. The game has passed them both by and the Oilers need to bring in fresh blood to fuel their malnourished troops /4
Their offseason acquisitions have been disappointing, to say the least, and their goaltending is still a big question mark. A rebuild isn't warranted but the Oilers need to evaluate their own decisions and then restock to fit the necessary needs in order to succeed. /5
Take Kyle Turris as an example. He was recently bought out by the Predators and was looked at as a low-risk buy. Holland was enticed by this and signed him to a 2x$1.65M deal. The problem Holland was attempting to address was his suspect forward depth. /6
The problem with Turris that Holland failed to acknowledge is that Kyle had a supporting cast in Nashville and still flopped. He was forced to play with the likes of James Neal, Jujhar Khaira, and Alex Chiasson with the Oilers and his tenure has been frustrating to say the least.
Tyson Barrie was brought in to be an offensive specialist and powerplay quarterback on a prove-it deal... For a team with the best powerplay in the NHL. Not to mention, he has a negative impact on his teammates analytically. At least he can be flipped for picks at the deadline /7
