Today & in the days ahead, road work continues for @CityOfMemphis public works crews as a much stronger than typical winter weather storm for Memphis is prompting the city to using plowing equipment for just the second time in the past eight years.
. @CityOfMemphis public works director: "The challenge will continue to be that we've got a lot of snow in as many of our major roads that we can.....it's going to be a longer event that we are typically accustomed to, we are asking our citizens be patient and understanding."
. @CityOfMemphis using 6 Brine Units, 16 sand trucks and 14 snowplows in their fleet to tackle the snow covered, major city streets. City crews also assisting @myTDOT crews on the state roads, such as Lamar, Union and Poplar.
. @CityOfMemphis public works director said major problem today is the lingering, subfreezing temperatures AND more snow/sleet expected Wednesday & Thursday. "It's so cold that salt is not effective right now, so you can put rock salt down, it just won't have any effect."
. @CityOfMemphis public works director said crews today, in addition to helping @myTDOT on state roads in city, especially tackling Frayser Boulevard, Winchester, Sam Cooper, Airways and Perkins, we are also trying to do major north, south, east, and west routes.
. @CityOfMemphis public works director: "We know it's going to be long term event because we've seen what temperature predictions are going to be for third round coming up in couple of days so we are going to be monitoring our staff, equipment, making sure it's running optimally."
A friendly reminder from @CityOfMemphis: the plowed snow has to go somewhere, i.e., driveways and curbs on private property. It is the HOMEOWNER's responsibility to clear that, not the city's.
. @CityOfMemphis public works director also offered this message to Memphians: "Don't drive. It's treacherous right now, it's very cold, if something should happen, you get stranded, with the wind temperatures, if you don't have to drive, it's an unnecessary risk."
. @LocalMemphis will continue to keep tabs and update your on the road conditions in Memphis and interstates across the Mid-South throughout today, tonight and days ahead.
